Fertiliser helps provide nutrients that plants need for healthy leaves, roots, flowers, and fruit. However, beginners are often unsure whether they should choose organic fertiliser or chemical fertiliser. Both can support plant growth, but they work differently and need to be used with care. The best choice depends on your plants, soil, available time, and gardening goals.
Organic fertilisers come from plant, animal, or naturally occurring materials. Examples include compost, well-aged animal manure, vermicompost, bone meal, and processed organic pellets. These products usually release nutrients more slowly as microorganisms break them down. They can also add organic matter to the soil, which may improve soil structure, moisture retention, and biological activity over time.
However, organic does not automatically mean risk-free. Fresh manure can burn plants or introduce unwanted pathogens, while excessive use of any organic fertiliser can still create nutrient imbalances. Organic products may also contain nutrients in lower or less predictable amounts, so results can take longer to appear.
Chemical fertilisers, also called synthetic or mineral fertilisers, provide nutrients in measured concentrations. Their labels often show an NPK ratio representing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These nutrients may become available to plants more quickly, making chemical fertilisers useful when plants need a specific nutrient boost or when gardeners want more predictable feeding.
The main risk is using too much. Excess chemical fertiliser can damage roots, burn leaves, cause soft and overly fast growth, or allow salts to build up in containers. Applying extra fertiliser does not make plants grow twice as well. Always follow the product instructions and avoid feeding stressed, severely wilted, or newly transplanted plants unless the label recommends it.
Beginners do not necessarily have to choose only one type. A balanced approach can work well. Compost may be used to support soil health, while a carefully measured fertiliser can supply nutrients during active growth, flowering, or fruit production. The important thing is to understand what each plant needs instead of feeding everything according to the same schedule.
Watch the plant and soil before adding more. Yellow leaves do not always mean nutrient deficiency; they may also result from overwatering, poor drainage, pests, or damaged roots. Fertiliser will not solve those problems and may make a stressed plant worse.
At the end of the day, organic fertilisers help build the soil gradually, while chemical fertilisers offer faster and more measured nutrition. Neither option is automatically perfect or harmful. Use suitable products, apply the correct amount, and focus on healthy soil, proper watering, and good growing conditions first.
