Travelling often can make plant care difficult, especially when nobody is available to water the garden regularly. The easiest solution is not to stop growing plants, but to choose varieties that are more forgiving when care becomes inconsistent. Plants that store water, tolerate slightly dry soil, or grow slowly are usually better suited to frequent travellers.
Snake plants are one of the easiest options for indoor spaces. Their thick upright leaves store moisture well, and they generally prefer the soil to dry between waterings. They also tolerate a range of indoor light conditions, making them useful for apartments, offices, and bedrooms.
ZZ plants are another excellent choice. Their thick roots and glossy leaves allow them to handle dry periods better than many common houseplants. They grow slowly and do not require frequent watering, which makes them especially suitable for people who may be away for several days at a time.
Aloe vera is a practical option for a bright balcony or sunny indoor area. As a succulent, it stores water in its fleshy leaves and generally prefers dry conditions between waterings. Make sure the pot has excellent drainage because too much water is more dangerous than a short dry period.
Pothos can also work well for travellers. It is more forgiving than many leafy houseplants and usually bounces back from occasional neglect. Place it in bright indirect light and avoid keeping the soil constantly wet before you leave.
For outdoor spaces, consider lemongrass and curry leaf plants once they are well established. Both enjoy Malaysia’s warm conditions and can become relatively hardy with mature root systems. However, newly planted or recently repotted plants still need more regular care.
Before travelling, water plants properly rather than flooding them. Check that pots drain freely, move sensitive containers away from harsh afternoon sun, and group plants with similar needs together. A light layer of mulch can also help outdoor pots retain moisture for longer.
Avoid leaving plants sitting in trays of water for days. This may seem like an easy watering solution, but it can lead to root rot and mosquito breeding.
At the end of the day, the best plants for frequent travellers are those that tolerate a little neglect. Snake plants, ZZ plants, aloe vera, pothos, lemongrass, and established curry leaf plants can all be good choices when matched to the right conditions.
